Tractus De Hermaphrodites; Or, a Treatise of Hermaphrodites
1718
Tractus De Hermaphrodites, written by Giles Jacob and first published in 1718, is a scientific treatise that explores the phenomenon of hermaphrodites—individuals with both male and female reproductive organs. The work examines historical, anatomical, and legal perspectives on hermaphrodites, including their treatment in marriage and personal relationships. Jacob categorizes different types of hermaphrodites and presents case studies that highlight their complexities in society, addressing themes of love, reproduction, and legal identity. This treatise serves as a significant scholarly investigation into gender and sexuality in early modern thought.
