Toy-Making in School and Home

This 1916 guide emerges from an era when educators believed that children's hands could teach their minds. Polkinghorne presents a vision of educational toy-making that goes far beyond simple crafts: by crafting toys from simple materials, children develop patience, resourcefulness, and a genuine sense of accomplishment. The book interweaves practical instructions with personal reflections from students, capturing the genuine joy children felt when transforming raw materials into something they could hold, play with, and be proud of. It represents a historical moment when educators championed hands-on learning as essential to childhood development, not merely as entertainment but as genuine pedagogy. For modern readers drawn to DIY culture, vintage crafts, or the roots of progressive education, this volume offers both nostalgic inspiration and a window into how an earlier generation understood the relationship between making and learning.
