Tin Foil and Its Combinations for Filling Teeth

Before composite resin and amalgam, before the modern dental chair, there was tin foil. This 19th century treatise captures a pivotal moment in dentistry when practitioners debated which materials could best preserve the human tooth. Henry Lovejoy Ambler makes an impassioned, detailed case for tin foil as a filling material: workable, affordable, and effective where gold remained prohibitively expensive. The text ranges from ancient tin's history to practical manipulation techniques, revealing dentistry as it then was: part craft, part science, constantly innovating with limited resources. Ambler writes for the working dentist, not the academic, offering guidance grounded in direct experience. Reading this today feels like peering through a keyhole into a forgotten era of medical practice, where the choice between a gold inlay and a tin foil restoration might determine whether a patient could afford to keep their teeth at all.
