Thirty Days in Lithuania in 1919
A Lithuanian-American returns to his homeland in 1919, after the chaos of World War I has torn the region apart. What he finds is a country in fragments: towns reduced to rubble, communities struggling under the weight of occupation, and a people caught between Polish and Bolshevik forces, fighting for a sovereignty the world has not yet recognized. Saurusaitis documents his thirty-day journey through this wounded landscape with the eyes of both insider and outsider, someone who left as a young man and returns to find everything changed, everything at stake. He walks through ruined streets, meets farmers and intellectuals, documents the defiant persistence of the Lithuanian language and spirit in the face of erasure. This is not nostalgia; it is witness. It is one man's record of a nation being born in blood and hope, a document of the exact moment when Lithuania's future hung in the balance.
