The Works of the Emperor Julian, Vol. 2

Julian the Apostate was the last pagan emperor of Rome, a philosopher-king who rejected the Christianity of his upbringing to champion the old gods, and this volume captures his voice across orations, satire, and correspondence. The orations here reveal Julian attacking the "New Cynics" who he saw as fraudulent philosophers, demanding a return to genuine Socratic inquiry rather than mere ascetic theatrics. But it's the satirical works that surprise: "The Caesars" skewers every Roman emperor from Augustus to Constantine in a witty banquet scene, while "Misopogon" is a disarmingly self-deprecating essay in which Julian mocks his own inability to grow a proper beard. The letters show the emperor wrestling with religious reform and theological disputes. Written in Greek during his brief reign (361-363 AD), these texts offer an unparalleled window into a civilization at the crossroads, when the old pagan world was not yet dead but fighting for its survival against the rising Christian tide. For readers drawn to late antiquity, intellectual history, or the strange补 humor of ancient philosophers, this collection is indispensable.
