The Warden

The Warden

Anthony Trollope

In the quiet cathedral city of Barchester, Reverend Septimus Harding enjoys a comfortable life as warden of Hiram's Hospital, a charitable almshouse funded by a church endowment. His annual £800 salary seems perfectly justified until young John Bold, a reform-minded local, publishes a fiery pamphlet questioning whether an elderly warden and two choristers deserve such generous stipends while the poor they serve receive so little. What begins as a question of institutional economics becomes a profound reckoning with conscience, as Harding must choose between the income that supports his family's status and the moral certainty that perhaps he does not deserve it. Trollope's 1855 masterpiece operates on multiple registers: a gently satirical portrait of Victorian clerical life, a sharp examination of how institutions protect their own, and a quietly devastating study of a good man torn between duty to himself and duty to others. The novel asks questions that remain urgently relevant: what do we owe the vulnerable, and how comfortably can we sleep while rationalizing our privileges?
