The U-Boat Hunters

The visceral, firsthand account of American sailors hunting German U-boats across the Atlantic during the Great War. Written by a man who sailed with them, this book captures the nerve-shredding tension of depth-charge runs, the eerie silence of a convoy crossing waters known to swarm with predators, and the strange camaraderie that blooms between men who know each dawn might be their last. Connolly doesn't romanticize war; he documents it with the plain-spoken precision of someone who lived it, shifting between technical detail and raw testimony, moving from wardroom debates about strategy to the terrifying moments when a shadow appears on the sonar scope. But what elevates this beyond simple adventure is its uneasy prescience. Written in the war's aftermath, Connolly's warnings about future conflicts and the need for naval readiness give the work an eerie weight that resonates differently today. For readers who want history not from the archives but from the deck plates.
