The Third Day at Stone's River

The third day at Stone's River saw the Union army on the brink of collapse. Confederate General Braxton Bragg had driven William Rosecrans's forces back to the Nashville pike, and the Federal line wavered under relentless assault. What followed was a desperate stand, a cavalry charge to hold the supply corridor, and a counterattack that would finally push Bragg into retreat. Kniffin's 1907 account captures the fog of war, the conflicting orders, and the individual moments of courage that decided the outcome. He details the chaos of generalship in the heat of battle, the cavalry's frantic efforts to keep the army fed and armed, and the terrible arithmetic of casualties that left both sides bloodied but only one victorious. The prose carries the weight of eyewitness testimony, rendering the smoke, the sound of musketry, and the terrible beauty of a winter battlefield where Americans killed Americans. For students of the Civil War, this offers a window into how one generation understood its war, complete with the heroics and limitations of early twentieth-century military history.
