Army of the Cumberland and the Battle of Stone's River

This 1907 account captures one of the Civil War's most brutal and overlooked battles through the eyes of those who fought it. The Battle of Stone's River (December 31, 1862 , January 2, 1863) saw the Army of the Cumberland, under Major-General William S. Rosecrans, face Confederate forces commanded by General Braxton Bragg in a clash that would determine the fate of Middle Tennessee. Over three days of fighting, roughly 24,000 soldiers became casualties, making it one of the bloodiest engagements of the war. Kniffin traces the army's movements, the tactical decisions of Rosecrans and his subordinates including George H. Thomas, Crittenden, and McCook, and the confusion that characterized so much of Civil War combat. The narrative moves from the strategic context through the battle's pivotal moments, portraying soldiers who held their ground amid chaos and adversity when the outcome hung in the balance. Written barely four decades after the battle, Kniffin's account draws on participant memories and official records to preserve a perspective that would otherwise be lost. For readers interested in the Civil War's Western Theater, this book offers a detailed window into an army's struggle and a battle that kept Nashville in Union hands.
