The Tale of the Argonauts

The Tale of the Argonauts

Rhodius Apollonius

Poetry

The Argonautica is the sole surviving Hellenistic epic, a relic of 3rd-century BC Alexandria that somehow escaped the attrition of centuries. Apollonius of Rhodes rewrote the hero's journey not as a straightforward tale of glory but as an exploration of the heart's dangerous territory. When Jason arrives at Colchis to claim the Golden Fleece, he finds something far more destabilizing than a kingdom's treasure: he finds Medea, a princess and sorceress whose passionate love for him becomes the poem's true subject. This is epic poetry unafraid of emotional interiority, tracing how desire unravels loyalty, how choice becomes fate, and how love can be both salvation and destruction. The sea voyages and monster encounters (the Harpies, the clashing rocks, the Sirens) are thrilling, but they function almost as prelude to the psychological tempest at the core: a woman caught between duty and passion, a hero whose greatest battle is with his own ambition. It influenced Virgil, shaped the Roman epic tradition, and remains astonishingly modern in its willingness to make feelings as consequential as battles.
