In 1886, the American astronomer and polymath Percival Lowell arrived in Japan and encountered a civilization that defied his Western assumptions. Part travelogue, part philosophical meditation, The Soul of the Far East records Lowell's attempt to understand a world organized around principles radically different from American individualism. He finds a society where the self dissolves into the family, where harmony trumps ambition, and where the very act of seeing is shaped by an alien logic.
