The Shoemaker's Apron: A Second Book of Czechoslovak Fairy Tales and Folk Tales

This collection pulses with the living magic of Central European villages where these stories were told around firelight for centuries before anyone wrote them down. Parker Fillmore gathered twenty tales from Czech, Moravian, and Slovak traditions in the early 20th century, and his retellings preserve something precious: the oral warmth, the wry humor, and the unexpected kindness that distinguishes Slavic folklore from its more famous cousins. The book opens with "The Twelve Months," in which Marushka, a gentle stepdaughter tasked with the impossible finding of winter violets discovers that even time itself can be moved by perseverance and grace. Other tales follow clever peasants who trap devils with riddles, enchanted objects that test human hearts, and servants who outwit proud nobles through sheer ingenuity. These are not sanitized nursery rhymes but stories that carry the rough wisdom of village life, where the poor are often wiser than the rich and where magic asks something of those who seek it. The collection offers both adventure and moral depth, making it ideal for reading aloud or discovering alone.
