Mighty Mikko: A Book of Finnish Fairy Tales and Folk Tales

Enter a world where forests whisper secrets and the sea hides kingdoms beneath its waves. Parker Fillmore's collection gathers the luminous folklore of Finland, where every tale carries the weight of old magic and older wisdom. At the center stands Mikko, the thoughtful woodsman whose journeys through trials and enchantment become a thread connecting stories of talking animals, cursed princes, and girls who must prove their worth in realms below the earth. The tales unfold with a distinctive Nordic chill, not the warmth of Grimm's cozy hearth but something wilder. Here are forests that trap the unwary, spells that transform the innocent, and quests that demand both courage and cunning. The stories collected in Mighty Mikko explore what it means to find one's place in a world where magic moves beneath the surface of ordinary life, where kindness mingles with danger, and where keeping one's word carries consequences both beautiful and terrible. This is folklore for readers who crave strangeness with their wonder, who want tales that feel ancient and unhomogenized, as crisp and bracing as a winter night in the far north.
