Born at Kildonan, Manitoba; educated as a lawyer; entered Presbyterian Ministry, ordained, 1891; at Carman, Manitoba, 1891-1892; at Winnipeg, 1892-1900; in churches in British Columbia and Ontario; interested in history of western Canada (Morgan, Canadian men and women of the time , 1912; Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography ). // Strathcona and Mount Royal, Donald Alexander Smith baron: 1820-1914. Born and educated in Scotland; entered employ of HBC, 1838; appointed special commissioner to investigate troubles connected with Red River, 1869; in Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, 1870-1874; in House of Commons, 1870-1880, 1887-1896; part of syndicate which bought St Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railway, 1879; active on behalf of CPR; notable financier; created K.C.M.G.
