The Republic of Ragusa: An Episode of the Turkish Conquest

Ragusa was never meant to survive. This tiny maritime republic, nestled on the Dalmatian coast, outlasted the Byzantine Empire, defied Venice, and navigated the treacherous waters between Christendom and the Ottoman Sultanate for over four centuries. Luigi Villari traces the republic's final and most perilous chapter: the moment when the Turkish conquest swept across the Balkans and brought the age of Ragusan independence to its dramatic close. What emerges is not merely a chronicle of dates and battles, but a portrait of a society that sustained itself through extraordinary diplomacy, strategic compromise, and a relentless will to exist. Villari examines the republic's unique character: its mercantile sophistication, its republican government, its position as a crossroads where East met West. The Turkish threat was not simply military; it was an existential test of whether this small state could adapt, negotiate, and endure. Written in the early twentieth century with scholarly rigor and an eye for the vivid detail, this is history for those who understand that the fate of small nations often reveals more about civilization than the victories of great empires.
