The Middle Five: Indian Boys at School

Francis La Flesche was born in a dome-shaped earth lodge in Nebraska, a member of the Omaha tribe, and his memoir captures a pivotal moment in Native American history with an insider's authority. As one of the first professional Native American ethnologists, La Flesche brought scholarly precision to these autobiographical sketches, but what emerges is something richer: a boy's-eye view of cultural collision, rendered with quiet humor and deep sorrow. The book follows La Flesche and his four closest friends, the "middle five", through their years at a mission school, where English is enforced through corporal punishment and speaking their native tongue invites the hickory rod. These are not tales of victimhood but of resilience: pranksters navigating between two worlds, clinging to Omaha traditions in secret while learning to perform whiteness. La Flesche's prose carries the weight of what was lost, language, ceremony, the utterances of fathers "belittled" in English translation, yet never lapses into sentimentality. For readers seeking authentic Native perspectives on the boarding school era, this book offers something rare: a record written from within, by someone who lived it and later spent his life documenting what his people stood to lose.
