The Hope of the Katzekopfs; Or, The Sorrows of Selfishness. a Fairy Tale.
1844
In a kingdom where the king is literally named for his cat-like stubbornness, a prince arrives bearing a name that means "self-willed" and a fate that seems sealed from birth. King Katzekopf and Queen Ninnilinda celebrate their long-awaited heir with tremendous fanfare, but their joy proves short-lived when the capricious fairy godmother Lady Abracadabra arrives with a warning: young Eigenwillig's selfishness, if left untempered, will bring catastrophe upon the entire realm. What follows is a darkly comic Victorian fairy tale that treats childhood stubbornness as a force capable of toppling kingdoms, exploring the anxieties of parenting and the terrible responsibility of shaping a young soul. Paget, writing in 1844, crafts a story where magic serves as both literal and metaphorical force, punishing pride while offering the possibility of redemption through humble growth. The tale endures not for its subtlety but for its frank willingness to treat children's moral formation as genuinely consequential work, worthy of supernatural intervention and kingdom-wide stakes.
