The Gist of Japan: The Islands, Their People, and Missions

This is a fascinating primary document from 1889, written by missionary R.B. Peery during the Meiji era when Japan was rapidly modernizing and opening to the West. Peery offers a windows-into-the-past view of the Japanese archipelago: its volcanic landscapes, its frequent earthquakes, its mountain-ringed cities, and the daily rhythms of a civilization that had long kept Westerners at arm's length. His prose carries the earnest conviction of a man who saw both spiritual urgency and genuine admiration for a culture he believed needed Christian salvation. What makes this book compelling isn't just its historical snapshots but its window into a particular American evangelical mindset at the height of missionary expansion. Peery's observations about Japanese daily life, social customs, and religious practices reflect both genuine curiosity and the paternalistic assumptions of his era. The book captures a moment when Japan was transforming at dizzying speed, and when American Christians were grappling with how to engage a civilization they barely understood.
