Published in 1917, 'The Fiddlers; Drink in the Witness Box' by Arthur Mee critically examines the impact of alcohol on society during World War I. The narrative follows John Fiddler as it explores moral dilemmas within the legal system, highlighting the detrimental effects of alcohol on both soldiers and civilians. Mee argues that the drink trade undermines national strength and exacerbates social issues, using statistics and anecdotes to support his claims. This work serves as both a historical reflection and a call for societal reform regarding alcohol consumption.
