The Eve of All-Hallows; Or, Adelaide of Tyrconnel, V. 2 of 3
1825
July 1, 1690. The morning mist rises off the Boyne River as two armies prepare to decide the fate of a kingdom. King William of Orange's forces mass on one bank, King James II's embattled troops entrenched on the other. Into this crucible of history steps Adelaide of Tyrconnel, a woman whose heart and loyalty are tested amid the thunder of approaching battle. This volume continues the romantic and political intrigue that has entangled noble figures including the Duke of Tyrconnel, Count Schomberg, and the beleaguered King James himself. Hartstonge weaves personal drama against the grand tapestry of the Williamite War in Ireland, rendering the march of troops, the weight of Strategy, and the personal sacrifices of those who must choose between crown and conscience. The historical romance form allows him to explore what it means to love and fight for something beyond oneself when the world is being remade in blood. The Battle of the Boyne would reshape Ireland for centuries, and Hartstonge captures both the intimate human cost and the sweeping significance of that single day. For readers who crave historical fiction that treats romance with seriousness and history with heart, this Victorian-era novel offers both adventure and emotional depth.
