The Defects of the Negro Church: The American Negro Academy. Occasional Papers No. 10

This 1904 pamphlet represents a remarkable document of Black intellectual courage. Written by Orishatukeh Faduma for the American Negro Academy, it offers an unsparing internal critique of the African American church - examining the very institution that served as the community's spiritual and social anchor. Faduma identifies several critical defects: a preoccupation with outward displays of faith that crowds out genuine inward spirituality, the neglect of rural congregations who needed ministers most, and the excessive emotionalism that, while culturally resonant, drowned out rational theological engagement. He calls urgently for educated clergy, arguing that the church cannot lead society if it remains intellectually adrift. What makes this document extraordinary is its underlying hope: Faduma writes as someone who believes deeply in the church's potential, urging reform not from contempt but from love. This is Black self-examination at its most honest - a tradition of intellectual critique that refused to let sacred institutions stagnate, demanding they serve their people more fully.
