The Cruise of the Royal Mail Steamer Dunottar Castle Round Scotland on Her Trial Trip

In the summer of 1890, a newly built steamship departs on her trial run around Scotland, and one passenger has brought not just luggage but a writer's eye for the remarkable. Walter Scott Dalgleish records every lurch of the deck and every stunning mile of coastline as the R.M.S. Dunottar Castle carries her cargo of dignitaries, engineers, and holiday-makers past the Hebrides, through the Firth of Clyde, and up to the ancient stones of Kirkwall Cathedral. This is travel as it once was: eight days of coal smoke and dancing, of church services held in the saloon and champagne served to celebrate the ship's flawless performance. The vessel itself is a character, a floating advertisement for British engineering with her gleaming saloons and efficient mail-carrying guts. For modern readers, Dalgleish's account offers something rare: passage into a Scotland that no longer exists, seen from the deck of a ship that defined elegance on the water. The Highlands, the islands, the fishing villages - all rendered in careful prose that treats them as wonders. Here is the past preserved in amber, intimate and specific, smelling of salt and engine grease.
