In 1827 Edinburgh, a desperate Irishman named William Burke stumbled into the most lucrative trade available to a man with no prospects: stealing bodies from graves and selling them to medical schools. What began as grave robbing quickly escalated into something far worse. When a bedridden lodger died owing Hare money, the two men discovered a simpler method than the grave. They had found a way to murder people quietly and sell them fresh. Over sixteen months, they killed at least sixteen men, women, and children, selling their corpses to the city's leading anatomist, Dr. Robert Knox. Alexander Leighton's 1861 account reads like a Victorian true crime investigation, capturing the squalid boarding houses, the medical schools' insatiable hunger for cadavers, and the particular horror of a city where the poor were worth more dead than alive. The book remains a chilling portrait of what happens when poverty, science, and moral vacuum collide.
