The Constitutional Development of Japan 1853-1881: Johns Hopkins University Studies in Historical and Political Science, Ninth Series

The Constitutional Development of Japan 1853-1881, authored by T. Iyenaga and published in the late 19th century, chronicles Japan's political transformation during a pivotal era. It details the shift from a feudal system to a constitutional monarchy, influenced by encounters with Western powers. Key events, such as the arrival of Commodore Perry and the subsequent collapse of the Shogunate, are examined alongside the roles of influential leaders and the social changes that led to the establishment of a parliamentary system by 1890. This work is significant for its analysis of Japan's adaptation to modern governance amid historical upheaval.
