The Church, the Schools and Evolution

A vigorous early 20th century polemic from the heart of the evolution debates that shaped American education and religion. J. E. Conant enters the fray with sharp theological arguments, positioning the Church's convictions against the scientific theories being taught in public schools. This is not a dispassionate treatise but a passionate defense of religious certainty in an era when Darwin's ideas were transforming how Americans understood themselves and the natural world. Conant challenges the scientific establishment on its own terms while mounting a philosophical case for the compatibility of faith and reason. The book captures a pivotal moment in American intellectual history, when the conflict between tradition and science was being fought not just in laboratories but in courtrooms, churches, and school boards across the country. For readers interested in the roots of the creationism debate, the history of American education, or the ways religious communities have engaged with scientific change, this text offers a window into arguments that still echo today.
