The Character of the British Empire

The Character of the British Empire, written by Ramsay Muir and published in 1917, provides a historical analysis of the British Empire's governance during World War I. Muir argues that the Empire is characterized by a unique blend of unity and self-government, distinguishing it from other contemporary empires. He highlights the significant self-governing powers granted to dominions like Canada and Australia, while also addressing the Empire's role in introducing law and organization in ancient civilizations such as India and Egypt. The book emphasizes the Empire's commitment to political liberty and the welfare of its diverse subjects.
