The Campaign of Chancellorsville

Theodore Ayrault Dodge was nineteen years old when he volunteered for the Union Army. He was there at Chancellorsville, serving in the Eleventh Corps, caught in the chaos when Stonewall Jackson's men came screaming through the woods on that famous flank attack. He would lose his leg at Gettysburg months later. This is not a distant scholar's account. This is a participant's reckoning with the battle that broke the Army of the Potomac's spirit and cost the Confederacy its greatest warrior. Dodge's 1881 study traces the ten-day campaign that made Robert E. Lee a legend and destroyed Joseph Hooker's reputation. Here is Lee's daring gamble, Hooker's fatal overconfidence, and the accidental shot that killed Jackson on the eve of his greatest triumph. Dodge writes with the unsparing clarity of a man who watched good soldiers die because of command failures, who understood logistics and morale because he lived them. Military historians have valued this work for over a century because it combines the immediacy of experience with analytical rigor. It remains essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how one catastrophic decision cascades into catastrophe.
