The Age of the Reformation

The Reformation wasn't merely a religious schism. It was the violent birth of the modern world, the moment when Europe shattered its medieval consensus and stumbled toward capitalism, nationalism, and the sovereign individual. Preserved Smith traces the seismic convergence of forces that made 16th-century Europe ripe for explosion: the rising bourgeois class hungry for new economic freedoms, the Renaissance's assault on inherited authority, the emergence of vernacular languages that fragmented Latin Christendom, and the printing press that spread dissent like wildfire. Smith argues that Luther's Ninety-Five Theses were not an isolated piety but the inevitable eruption of deeper transformations already reshaping European consciousness. This classic early 20th-century study remains essential reading for anyone seeking to understand how we got from the enclosed world of medieval Catholicism to the fractured, modern West.
