The 116th Battalion in France

This is a firsthand account from the front lines of the Great War, written by a man who marched with the 116th Battalion through the bloodiest months of 1916-1918. E.P.S. Allen doesn't offer strategic overviews or political analysis. Instead, he gives us the granular reality: the cold at Witley Camp, the dread of the transport across the Channel, the first sight of Boulogne harbor, and then the Somme, Vimy, and the grinding attritional warfare that swallowed a generation. Recruited from Ontario County, these Canadian boys left farms and small towns for a war they barely understood, and found themselves in the mud of Picardy learning what brotherhood meant when death was a daily visitor. Allen writes to remember, to ensure the names don't fade, to honor the specific and irreplaceable men who served beside him. A century later, this remains a vital testament to the human cost of war and the bonds that form when ordinary people are asked to do extraordinary things.
