When Ted Turner’s family trades their Vermont farm for a cramped house in Freeman's Falls, New Hampshire, the boy finds himself surrounded by cotton mills instead of open fields. The move feels like a exile, especially when his father takes work at the local mill and Ted is sent to labor at the Fernald estate. Yet beneath the soot and the long hours lies something unexpected: a household full of odd characters, a crumbling mansion full of secrets, and most importantly, Mr. Laurie Fernald himself, a man whose own struggles mirror Ted's in surprising ways. Ted's love for science, particularly electricity and the magic of telecommunications, becomes his anchor. He dreams of building inventions, of proving that a mill boy's imagination is worth more than the劳动 of his hands. The book follows Ted as he navigates friendship, hardship, and the quiet hope that dreams survive even in factory smoke.
