Sur La Route De Palmyre

The narrator's journey to Palmyre becomes something far more profound than a simple travelogue. In the labyrinthine souks of Damascus, thick with the scent of spices and the murmur of commerce, she meets Roumana, a young bride whose quiet dignity conceals a life of unspoken longing. Their friendship, formed across cultural and religious lines, becomes the emotional anchor of the narrative. Through Roumana's story, we glimpse the private world of women in 1920s Syria, their dreams circumscribed by tradition, their voices rarely heard. The ancient ruins of Palmyre, with their broken columns and ghostly memory of empire, provide the perfect counterpoint: a civilization that once spanned the world, now silent. Henry-Bordeaux writes with sensitivity and immediacy, capturing a Middle East on the cusp of modernity, where the old ways still hold sway but already tremble. This is travel writing that refuses to remain superficial. It asks what it means to pass through a place, to truly see its people, and to carry their stories home.
