Superwomen

What makes a woman unforgettable? Albert Payson Terhune takes up this age-old question in these vivid biographical sketches, profiling historical figures who shattered the ordinary bounds of feminine influence. From Lola Montez, the scandalous dancer who became kingmaker, to Ninon de L'Enclos, the 17th-century salon hostess whose wit toppled reputations, to the legendary Helen of Troy, Terhune dissects the elusive alchemy of charisma, will, and cunning that transformed these women into legends. Written in the early 20th century with an earnest, occasionally quizzical masculine perspective, the book functions as both a collection of ripping good stories and a fascinating period artifact: an Edwardian man's attempt to decode the secrets of female power. These are not queens in palaces or warriors on battlefields, but women who wielded influence through sheer personality, often at tremendous personal cost. Whether you read it for the historical gossip or for the window it provides into how an earlier era understood (and misunderstood) feminine magnetism, these profiles linger.
