Sonnenländer

A sun-seeker crosses the Pacific in 1920s steerage, chasing light through the tropics and subtropics into a Japan that no longer exists. Walter Rummel's travelogue begins in Hamburg, wends through Cuba and Mexico, burns across the California desert, and arrives in Yokohama with deliberate purpose: he will not sleep in European hotels. Instead, he finds a Japanese inn, endures sweltering mosquito nights, and wanders lantern-lit streets where geisha move like living paintings. With his host Shibata, he rides rural trains to countryside baths, eats simply with chopsticks, and watches fishermen pull their boats onto ancient shores. The journey builds through floods, a taifun, a jarring earthquake, and a breathtaking descent of the Tenryugawa rapids before settling into contemplative stillness on Miyajima, the "island of the blessed." This is travel writing as immersion, before tourism, before the modern world flattened difference into sameness. For readers who dream of old Japan, who crave the romance of actual journey, who want to taste the past before it vanished.
