Six Thousand Country Churches

Religion/Spirituality, Sociology

In 1919, the rural American church was dying. Thousands of small congregations, stretched across the countryside, struggled against depopulation, poverty, and the gravitational pull of expanding cities. This landmark study, conducted under the auspices of the Commission on Church and Country Life and authored by sociologist Charles Otis Gill alongside famed Progressive Era reformer Gifford Pinchot, went into the fields and towns of Ohio to count what remained. Through systematic surveys of attendance, ministerial presence, and community engagement, Gill and Pinchot documented a system in crisis: overextended pastors serving multiple underfunded congregations, dwindling pews, and villages watching their spiritual centers hollow out. But this is not merely a elegy for a vanishing world. The authors bring Progressive Era confidence to their data, seeking not just to diagnose the illness but to prescribe remedies. The result is a remarkable time capsule that captures rural America at a inflection point, when the automobile had not yet rescued the countryside but mechanized farming had already begun to empty it. For readers interested in American religious history, the Progressive Era, or the complex forces that shaped (and continue to shape) small-town life, this volume offers an unflinching statistical portrait of faith under pressure.
