Sinks of London Laid Open: A Pocket Companion for the Uninitiated, to Which is Added a Modern Flash Dictionary Containing All the Cant Words, Slang Terms, and Flash Phrases Now in Vogue, with a List of the Sixty Orders of Prime Coves

Sinks of London Laid Open is an 1848 plunge into the fetid heart of Victorian London's underworld. Written as an exposé of the city's most desperate inhabitants, it catalogs the common lodging houses of St. Giles's, the cadgers who beg for survival, and the elaborate hierarchies of the criminal poor. The author, writing with the curious zeal of an explorer in hostile territory, paints lodgers sleeping three to a bed in rooms thick with vermin and vice, while chartingly documenting the flash language that served as the underworld's encryption. But the true treasure here is the extensive flash dictionary: sixty orders of 'prime coves' categorized by their particular scams, from 'dukes' (hands) to 'grass' (grassWidow), from 'mufflers' (faces) to 'crossing the flax' (stealing from pockets). This is language invented to deceive the police and polite society, a cant that has since dissolved into history's fog. Part social horror, part lexicographical artifact, the book captures a London that existed beneath the gaslit streets, a world of cunning, poverty, and survival that the respectable classes paid to glimpse but never truly saw.
