Sex in Education; Or, a Fair Chance for Girls

This 1873 medical treatise sparked one of the most heated educational debates of the 19th century. Edward H. Clarke, a Harvard-trained physician, argued that rigorous academic study damaged women's health, stunted their reproductive development, and made them unfit for motherhood. He claimed the female brain could not handle the same workload as the male brain without "masculinizing" the body and ruining women's delicate constitutions. The book provoked fierce responses from educators, doctors, and feminists including Julia Ward Howe and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who countered that women had been studying for centuries without such catastrophic effects. Though now thoroughly discredited, Clarke's work remains a disturbing window into the pseudo-scientific justifications used to restrict women's opportunities, and a testament to how wrong authoritative "science" can be.
