Roughing It in Siberia, with Some Account of the Trans-Siberian Railway, and the Gold-Mining Industry of Asiatic Russia
1897
In 1897, an American and two Englishmen boarded a train in Moscow with a singular mission: to traverse the vast, frozen expanse of Siberia and assess whether Englishmen could stomach Russia's autocratic regime in pursuit of its gold. What they found was a railway still being born through permafrost and wilderness, a territory where colonization met capitalism in its rawest form. Robert L. Jefferson records every rattling carriage, every officious chinovnik, every wretchedly cold night in a flea-bitten hotel with the unsentimental eye of a reporter and the sharp tongue of a man who refuses to be awed. He watches emigrants packed into cattle cars heading east for cheap land, visits Khirghiz Cossack camps, crosses the frozen Obi on a lurching sledge, and sits across from rough millionaire gold-miners in Tomsk to learn exactly what rules govern the desperate and the dreaming. This is empire as infrastructure: the Trans-Siberian as both engineering marvel and colonial arm, threading civilization through three thousand miles of nothing. Jefferson is opinionated, occasionally unsympathetic, and utterly unwilling to prettify what he sees. For readers who love railway history, forgotten frontiers, and travel writing that treats the reader like an adult, this is a vivid time capsule of the Russian empire at its most ambitious.
