Recollections of Full Years

The first memoir ever published by a First Lady of the United States, Helen Herron Taft's "Recollections of Full Years" offers an intimate window into the life of a woman who helped build an American dynasty. Born in Cincinnati in 1861, Helen 'Nellie' Herron came from a family of means and culture, her father a successful lawyer and judge who surrounded his children with music, education, and the ambitions that would shape their futures. She met William Howard Taft young, and what began as a courtship rooted in shared intellect and drive would span decades of rising political power: governor-general of the Philippines, Secretary of War, President of the United States, and finally Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Helen was not merely beside him; she pushed him toward the presidency he hesitated to seek. The memoir captures her at her most vivid: the Washington hostess who transformed social politics, the woman who convinced the Japanese ambassador's wife to gift Washington its iconic cherry trees, the only woman in history who was both presidential wife and chief justice's wife. These pages reveal the private calculations, cultural ambitions, and emotional textures of a partnership that remade American political life.
