Public School Education

Michael Müller wrote this passionate polemic in the late 19th century, but it reads like it could have been penned yesterday. A German immigrant who loved America deeply, Müller watched the public school system expand with growing dread, convinced that removing religious instruction from education would erode the moral foundations of the nation. His argument is sharp: schools that teach the mind but ignore the soul produce clever citizens without character, ambition without honor. Müller writes with the urgency of a man who believes he's witnessing the beginning of societal collapse. Whether you agree with his premises or not, the book is a fascinating time capsule of anxieties that haven't faded a century later. The debate he enters, about what schools should teach, whose values should prevail, and whether morality can exist without religion, remains unmistakably alive.
