Princess Polly at Play

This early 20th-century children's novel captures the golden haze of summer childhood. Princess Polly, along with her dear friends Rose and Sprite, anticipates a glorious season at Cliffmore by the sea - their private kingdom of salt air and endless days. But their plans shift when bold Gwen Harcourt arrives, her brash energy testing the group dynamics and promising new adventures. The story follows the girls as they navigate friendship, small jealousies, and the gentle dramas of youth against a sunlit shore. Their summer fills with imaginative play, exploration, and the genuine excitement of attending a friend's wedding - a milestone that adds tender weight to their escapades. The book endures because it captures something universal: that fleeting sense of possibility summers held in childhood, when new faces could upend your world and a trip to the seashore felt like an expedition to another realm. It is for readers who loved Anne of Green Gables, who remember building sandcastles as if they were actual castles, who understand that childhood friendships - with all their friction and devotion - shape us.
