Pioneering in Cuba: A Narrative of the Settlement of La Gloria, the First American Colony in Cuba, and the Early Experiences of the Pioneers

In 1900, a group of Americans disembarked at Nuevitas Harbor with visions of tropical paradise and fresh starts. What they found was mud, mosquitoes, and a landscape that refused to match the romantic vista from the sea. James Meade Adams chronicles the birth of La Gloria, the first American colony in Cuba, in this vivid account of optimism confronting reality. Through his eyes, we meet the diverse settlers who left their hometowns across the United States seeking opportunity in the post-Spanish-American War boom, and watch as they navigate the physical hardships, strange fevers, and delicate negotiations with local Cubans who already called this land home. This is neither a triumphant frontier saga nor a cautionary tale, but something more honest: a plainspoken record of what it actually felt like to build a new life in a place that was never waiting for you. Adams writes without glossing over the disappointments or the small victories, capturing a moment when America's westward impulse turned southward toward the Caribbean.
