Pioneer Work in Opening the Medical Profession to Women

Elizabeth Blackwell

Biography & Autobiography

In 1849, Elizabeth Blackwell became the first woman to earn a medical degree in the United States. This memoir, written near the end of her remarkable life, recounts the extraordinary obstacles she faced and overcame to make that achievement possible. Rejected by every American medical school, she traveled to Geneva, Switzerland, where she was admitted only as a joke by the all-male student body who expected her to withdraw in humiliation. Instead, she graduated at the top of her class. Blackwell returned to America to found the New York Infirmary for Indigent Women and Children, creating the first hospital staffed entirely by women. But this is more than a professional triumph. It is a deeply personal account of what it costs to be the first: the loneliness, the social ostracism, the constant dismissal by colleagues who refused to take her seriously. Her prose is precise and unsentimental, revealing a woman of formidable will who understood she was not merely earning a credential, but tearing open a door that had been welded shut. For anyone interested in the history of medicine, the fight for women's equality, or the quiet revolution of showing up despite being told you don't belong.
