Pelléas and Mélisande
Pelléas and Mélisande is a Symbolist play written by Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck, first performed in 1893. The narrative centers on the tragic, forbidden love between Mélisande, who is married to Golaud, and his brother Pelléas, leading to themes of jealousy and fate. Although it did not achieve significant success on stage, it garnered admiration from notable figures in the Symbolist movement, including Strindberg and Rilke. This recording features an abridged version of the text adapted by Claude Debussy for his operatic interpretation, which Maeterlinck approved.
