Out of a Labyrinth

Out of a Labyrinth

Lawrence L. Lynch

Novels

A detective returns to the case that nearly got him killed. Wounded and pride smarting, our narrator the "best detective on the force" has already been shot from a hedge while investigating a farming settlement called Groveland. Two young women have vanished from this deceptively peaceful community, and someone will kill again to keep their secrets buried. Determined to unmask the villain hiding behind respectable farmhouses and thrifty farmers, the detective reinfiltrates Groveland disguised as a laborer, knowing his cover could be blown at any moment. Anonymous warnings, a near-fatal ambush, and a threatening letter that exposes his identity all amplify the danger as he digs deeper into an intricate web of deception. The rural American setting becomes its own character: wholesome on the surface, corrupt beneath. This is early detective fiction, written before the genre's conventions calcified, with a first-person narrator whose wounded pride and quiet determination drive the mystery forward. For readers who love period atmosphere and the pleasure of watching a skilled investigator work against mounting threats.
