On Holy Images
On Holy Images is a treatise by Saint John of Damascus, written in the 8th century, defending the veneration of holy images against the Iconoclast movement led by Emperor Leo the Isaurian. In this work, Saint John articulates the distinction between images and idols, arguing that the former serve to honor God rather than detract from divine worship. This treatise was significant in the theological debates of the time and played a crucial role in the condemnation of Iconoclasm by the seventh General Council. This edition marks the first publication of the text in English.
