Old Love Stories Retold

Richard Le Gallienne's 1903 collection gathers some of history's most poignant love stories and retells them with Edwardian grace and melancholic beauty. These are not mere biographies but imaginative reconstructions, weaving together letters, memoirs, and pure invention to resurrect romances that burned brightly despite, or because of, their imperfections. The collection includes the tale of Heinrich Heine and his devoted Mathilde, whose twenty-year marriage became a refuge for the ailing poet, offering simple devotion against his lifelong attraction to brilliant, complicated women. Le Gallienne writes with the tender wisdom of someone who believes love's true nature reveals itself not in passion's first flames but in the quiet endurance that follows. The prose carries the lush sensibility of the fin de siècle, by turns wistful and warm, capturing how genius and simplicity, cynicism and faith, can find strange harmony in one heart. For readers who savor literary romance, the kind that understands happiness is less dramatic than lasting, these retold tales offer an hour of quiet, aching beauty.
