Health & Medicine

The oldest medical book you will ever hold. Written in the 1st century CE by the Roman encyclopedist Aulus Cornelius Celsus, this treatise is the sole surviving fragment of a vast Greek and Roman scientific corpus that otherwise vanished into the medieval darkness. For centuries it lay hidden in monastery libraries until 1478, when it became the first medical book ever printed, launching the age of printed medical literature. Here you will find the entire sweep of ancient medicine: dietetics and prevention, the four signs of inflammation, pharmaceutical preparations drawn from the Mediterranean pharmacopoeia, and surgical procedures that stagger the modern imagination. Celsus describes amputations, cataract couching (removing the clouded lens with a needle), lithotomy (bladder stone removal), and the excision of breast tumors. His empirical approach, his insistence on observation and systematic classification, feels strikingly modern. Yet this is no mere historical curiosity. Celsus wrote for the educated Roman gentleman, organizing and synthesizing generations of Greek medical learning into a coherent system. His prose is clear, methodical. The sections on wound care and inflammation remain genuinely useful. For historians of medicine, classicists, and anyone curious about where our medical tradition truly begins, this is an essential encounter with the foundations of healing.
