New Forces in Old China: An Inevitable Awakening

An American missionary and observer documents China at the most dramatic turning point in its modern history. Written in the early 1900s as Western trade, politics, and Christian missions rapidly reshape the Qing dynasty, Arthur Judson Brown offers his firsthand impressions of a civilization confronting forces that will transform it forever. The book captures China on the cusp - still largely traditional, conservative, ancient in its rhythms - but already beginning to stir under the pressure of foreign influence. Brown writes with evident admiration for Chinese civilization while documenting the tensions between old and new, the vast economic changes, and the religious and political upheaval. This is a period document reflecting its era's assumptions and limitations, but it remains a fascinating window into how an American observer understood the seismic shifts underway in East Asia.
