Mother Goose in Prose
1897
L. Frank Baum's first children's book, published three years before The Wonderful Wizard of Oz transformed American literature forever. Here the beloved Mother Goose rhymes become portals to fuller worlds: Little Boy Blue transforms into a meditation on lost innocence, Humpty Dumpty becomes a cautionary tale of pride and consequence, and Sing a Song o' Sixpence introduces Gilligren, a dreamer whose quest for fortune leads him through misadventure and unlikely salvation. The collection also features the debut of Maxfield Parrish, whose luminous illustrations would define an era of fantasy art. These are not mere retellings but reimagings that honor the lyricism of the originals while discovering their hidden emotional depth. For readers who know Baum only from Oz, this book reveals the imaginative foundations: the same gentle humor, the same belief in wonder, the same understanding that children's stories can carry real weight.
