Mopsa the Fairy

Mopsa the Fairy opens on a boy named Jack living with his aunt in a marshland cottage, where the sea whispers at the edge of the world and strange lights dance over the reeds. When a storm brings a mysterious egg to shore, Jack's ordinary life cracks open. From it emerges Mopsa, an unconventional fairy neither wholly beautiful nor wholly kind, whose kingdom lies somewhere between waking and dreaming. What follows is neither the tidy adventure of conventional Victorian children's fiction nor the moralized tale one might expect. Instead, Ingelow weaves something stranger: a journey through island kingdoms, encounters with magical creatures both gentle and menacing, and a growing friendship between a practical boy and a fairy who defies easy understanding. The story captures that peculiar quality of childhood where the world felt both wondrous and deeply unsettling, where magic demanded as much as it gave. Though lesser-known than Carroll or Kingsley, Ingelow created something rarer: a fantasy that honors the true strangeness of childhood imagination.
